to understand why a hot dog joint deserves the first lehighism post, we must go back to the lehigh beginning. at least, to MY lehigh beginning.
in April 2009, luke's company flew us out for a pre-move apartment scout trip. we had a few days to figure out where we wanted to live and secure a lease. way back then, we were living in southern california in a beloved little place we refer to as the "treehouse apartment". it was beautiful and new and came with a giant saline pool. seabreezes, free of charge. while we were excited for a new adventure in PA and had known that it was coming, we were so sad to leave our friends and all that we loved on the west coast. oh, and i was about 10 weeks pregnant.
with this as the backdrop for our apartment hunt and after hours of checking out dingy apartments, i morphed into a whiny/pregnant/unreasonable lindsey. i can remember thinking that i was being unpleasant, so it must have been pretty bad. :)
what does this have to do with Yoccos? well, we drove past one and in a fit of snobbery i said, "are we seriously going to move here? they have HOT DOG restaurants. this is disgusting."
here's an excerpt from a food blog that gave Yoccos it's highest rating of five grease stains, "Yocco's hot dogs, alone, are worth the trip from Philadelphia to Allentown. Add a large side of pierogies, and it's petal to the metal time... the classic meal of 3 dogs, a large pierogies and a chocolate milk is what Yocco's is all about."
yeah, you read that correctly. THREE hotdogs, pierogies, and chocolate milk as ONE meal. speechless.
don't know what a pierogie is? stick with me, i'll cover that in another post.
Yocco's is in stark contrast to the sushi bars and frozen yogurt spots we had grown accustom to seeing. it's homier. full of authenticity and nitrates. beautiful, in a Type-2 diabetes sorta way. part of what we love about this corner of pennsylvania is that it's not an endless stripmall. it has character and history. and so, i love you, yoccos...all six of your regional locations.

wow. hilarious and disturbing all in one post. I'm not sure how I feel about a hot dog resturant. how do they stay open is my first thought, second thought, I'd have to be really really really hungry... yeah. I'm sure other thoughts will surface but for now I'm still in between laughing and puking a little in my mouth :) miss you!
HAHA!! When I read pedal to the metal all I could think is that is exactly what you'll be doing... putting the pedal to the metal to the nearest baño!!
Oh and pierogies are good but not sure I'd pair them with hot dogs.
You act like you never went to Pat's Chicago Dogs in Syracuse. Did you not? Isn't that a hot dog restaurant? :-)
I feel a little sick reading this, seriously. Mixing hot dogs and chocolate milk alone makes my tummy turn. And I even like hot dogs...
By the way- I love your blog :-) You make me smile A LOT. And I love that when I comment, I get to look at two cute little birds on what I think are magnolia trees... it must screams 'happy'. ;-)
ah! Angie, good point! seriously, Pat's never even crossed my mind...i think i went there once in High School. but that actually IS probably the Northern Indiana equivalent. and ps, when are you going to start your blog back up?? it was fantastic! :)
OH Lindz - I can not STAND "Yuck-o's" and I moved to the Lehigh Valley when I was six! I actually like hot dogs ( on occasion) but Yoccos is just gross. Your blog cracks me up! I just can't tell you how glad we are that you didn't allow our nasty hot dog restaurant to deter your move to our little corner of the world. We just love you guys. Sure missed Sadiebaby this morning - will pray you all get well! ~Melissa
Ah, Melissa!! You don't like Yoccos's? Well we love it!! Chili dog, perogies, & chocolate milk (from Rosenberger's Dairy) - yum!!! My uncle, who grew up in this area, moved to Florida as a young adult and remains there to this day. Whenever he comes to visit, the first place he wants to go is Yocco's. During his usual week-long stays, he eats there often. Did you know that Yocco's was founded by Lee Iacocca's uncle & that Lee Iacocca operated Yocco's for a time? Just an FYI. :)
